Understaff3D heads will fit onto any pole, we proved it by growing bamboo and attaching our hub system. It barely rolled but it worked. Then we found shower curtain rods and 3/4" dowels fit perfectly. Still wasn't great, but proved the DIY ability of our system. The pole you use matters alot!
So we tried to save everyone some time and made deals to acquire perfect space grade materials since the hardware store can only take you so far. We custom cut each pole to your desired length, wrap it with the grip tape of your choosing, and finish it with fire proof silicon so it can be used with fire dragon hubs as well.
When it comes to grip tape, we offer what we consider the best contender for each type of material, ensuring that everyone will find something that works for them. Nimbus + OM grip are sourced from Dark Monk and DuraGrip + GeckoGrip are from Brit&Kel at Flow On Fire. These are two of the best companies in the game, and you can research even further in depth from their respective stores, or acquire more grip to rewrap yourself.
We typically do not mark the centerline as we find it detrimental to building the feel and kinesthetic awareness of your prop, but we can add a simple middle upon request.
Due to major US Tariffs brought on by the current US Administration, direct costs to us for proper poles have increased 20% across the board, with another bump approaching. As a shop that only exists for the passion of the craft, we have chosen to split this cost increase equally with you, rather than pass it straight on to you. Misery Loves Company.

- All Poles are 7075 space grade aluminum that has been laser straightened on a modified lathe. This ensures the perfect straightness and rigidity a dragon staff requires, every time without fail.
- 7075 Aluminum (7075) is far more rigid than Carbon Fiber (CF) and consequently is drastically less bouncy when compared to CF, especially at long lengths like a 6ft Partner Dragon.
- 7075 is only 15-20% heavier than "Dragon Worthy" CF, however 7075 doesnt require heat tape at the tips to protect it from fire since it has no glue in it. CF + the heat tape is very close in weight to 7075 without heat tape.
- 7075 is almost as strong as titanium with the weight profile of aluminum, allowing peace of mind that it wont get bent, while also giving the best bounce response for a full sized dragon staff with a diameter above 16mm.
- Available in 19mm or 22mm diameter for full sized dragons. Each pole is custom cut to your desired length, hand sanded and filed, wrapped.
- All 16mm poles are 1 meter long and are used for our Meter Dragon setup.
- All of our 19mm and 22mm poles will work with 3rd party fire hubs such as the Threeworld V3 Hubs.
Length:
You can determine the default base length of a dragon staff for your body size by subtracting 7 inches from your height. For perfect accuracy, measure from the floor to the middle of your lips while looking straight forward and not wearing shoes. This will be the height at which you can do all moves with equal effort.
Going longer or shorter (you have about 4 inches either way) will make horizontal or vertical moves easier respectively. Too long, and the staff takes extra energy to not hit the ground with vertical spins, go too short and the staff moves so fast its unpredictable and hard to control. Going longer than what you measured will make the staff more horizontal move oriented. If your wingspan is "taller" than your height, moving away from default size has less effect.
Diameter:
95% of the Dragon staves out in the world use 22mm (~7/8) diamter for the pole simply because that was the easiest to get shipped in its early days, not because it was tested best. The swing among the professionals has been to smaller diameters, with 19mm (3/4") being the strongest contendor. 19mm poles will travel less along your body for the same rotation speed, allowing the user more time to think and manipulate the prop when compared to 22mm. The trade off is more bruises from a smaller contact area, and slightly more bounciness than 22mm, aswell as that intended (hopefully) loss of rolling travel speed. In house, we use 19mms for double dragons, doing leg work and tosses, but still run 22mm for fire since we like to go fast!
If you are 5'4" or shorter, we tend to recommend a 19mm diameter, which should "even out" to a 22mm on a taller person. If you're 6' 2" or above, a 22mm should be perfect and a 19mm "too slow" for a default universal setup.
If you are unsure, we recommend the classic default of 22mms. If you already have a 22mm pole or dragon, or are into tech, we recommend getting a 19mm pole, as Understaff3d heads are fully modular and will work on your current pole and the new 19mm, so you can try each loadout rather than have duplicates!

- Rubber Derivative - gets grippier with use, stays in place well (less seam folding from overuse).
- Grippy right up until it fails, rather than losing grip over time. Textured for maximum grip surface area.
- Shouldnt be used when wet, but wont degrade or get moldy from presence of water. Still works with sweat.
- Can be cleaned with soap and water w/ a towel or chlorax wipes.
- Lightest per foot grip tape, therefore it can cover more length without weight penalty.
- Available in Red, UV Green, Light Blue, and Purple.
- OM Grip
- 22mm poles come wrapped Purple and 19mm comes Blue, while supplies last.
- 43" shaft coverage and 1 Year before replacement if kept dry and out of sunlight.

- Nimbus Grip (+$10)
- Available in White or Black.
- 50+" shaft coverage 4 + Year lifetime, even when left outside, extremely hearty.
- Silicone Foam - wont burn or scar, can and should be sanded for extra grip over time. Use fine-ish sand paper and go at it, it makes a huge difference.
- Extremely water and weather proof, but very slick when wet/sweaty. Unusable when soaked.
- Can be cleaned with soap and water, alcohol, or chlorax wipes, even submerged in the shower and washed off.
- lightest per foot griptape, also longest lasting.
- Available in White or Black.
- Gecko Grip Hybrid Nimbus (the "hairy" type) (+$70)
- Black colored GeckoGrip wrapped overtop spongey Nimbus Grip, giving the weatherproofing and amazing grip of GeckoGrip with the padding/protection of Nimbus Grip.
- Feels extremely nice to use, the highest possible grip, and doesnt hurt from use, but comes at the cost of the added weight of two grip wraps.
- Once the GeckoGrip wears out in a year or two, you have perfect nimbus grip ready to go underneath it without needing to rewrap your pole! Nimbus Grip sands and cleans extremely well so the underlayer alone will last for years! Easily the longest lasting grip.
- Waterproof, and will work fine with sweat. Let it dry out if you soak it for no ill effects.
- Can be cleaned with soap and water, chlorax wipes, and lint rollers for a quick clean!
- Most costly from double materials and labor, but highest grip, highest padding/protection, works when wet, and higest durability and longevity!
- 19mm pole only, as after wrapping usable diameter is quite enlarged. Designed to work best with our Eye of the Sky Dragon Heads!
- Black colored GeckoGrip wrapped overtop spongey Nimbus Grip, giving the weatherproofing and amazing grip of GeckoGrip with the padding/protection of Nimbus Grip.
Remember, all Understaff3d Heads will fit onto any 16mm- 25mm pole. You can use homegrown Bambo, Shower Curtain rods, and dowel rods for cheap. Our adapters will cover most store bought diameters and you can use electrical tape if you find an odd diameter you just have to try. That covers the low cost options.
Our heads will fit onto a Ninja Pyrate dragon pole aswell as a Dark Monk helio dragon pole without using the adapters. If the fire dragon heads come off, our heads will fit on the pole! Works with FlowToys poles aswell!
My friends all said Carbon Fiber is the best...
Wrong! Sort of..... Carbon fiber is best at 16mm diameters and below, and at those diameters 7075 just cant compete. But above that diamter, in the dragon zone of 19-22mm, 7075 out performs most CF while being fractionally heavier. Not to mention the carcinogy of prolonged handling of CF. Unless you need to minimize weight for something like double dragons, the price isnt worth the reduced weight and more bounciness.
Unless... you must have a collapsible staff for travel. These will be bouncier than single body staves already so the added bounce of the CF is less problematic. Additionally the Carbon Fiber weight reduction helps make up for the added weight of the shaft locking mechanisms employed to make the staff collapsible.
The ONLY collapsible staves that Understaff3D trusts and endorses are the Fusion Collapsible carbon fiber staves from Threeworlds. If you want a collapsible for dragon use, dont waste your time entertaining any other staves, go Fusion by Threeworlds. Other than that, we offer the most responsive one piece staves you can get.
